Debtors’ Prison Returns in the US
IN JAIL FOR BEING IN DEBT – You committed no crime, but an officer is knocking on your door. More Minnesotans are surprised to find themselves being locked up over debts. It’s not a crime to owe money, and debtors’ prisons were abolished in the United States in the 19th century. But people are routinely being thrown in jail for failing to pay debts. In Minnesota, which has some of the most creditor-friendly laws in the country, the use of arrest warrants against debtors has jumped 60 percent over the past four years, with 845 cases in 2009, a Star Tribune analysis of state court data has found. Not every warrant results in an arrest, but in Minnesota many debtors spend up to 48 hours in cells with criminals. Consumer attorneys say such arrests are increasing in many states, including Arkansas, Arizona and Washington, driven by a bad economy, high consumer debt and a growing industry that buys bad debts and employs every means available to collect. Whether a debtor is locked up depends largely on where the person lives, because enforcement is inconsistent from state to state, and even county to county. In Illinois and southwest Indiana, some judges jail debtors for missing court- ordered debt payments. In extreme cases, people stay in jail until they raise a minimum payment. In January, a judge sentenced a Kenney, Ill., man “to indefinite incarceration” until he came up with 0 toward a lumber yard debt. “The law enforcement system has unwittingly become a tool of the …

There? really are not two sides to this story. Imposing criminal penalties on someone as a collection tool is obscene. Living in the US is becoming more and more like a Dickens play.

0:28 “when they ignore a court judgement…” The arrest is due to a court judgement not the debt directly. There are three types of debt from which you cannot escape through bankruptcy. They are court ordered payments, debts incurred from your defrauding another, and student loans. Our system of debt based money ensures the creation of debt slaves. The criminalization of poverty is just this system reaching its full? maturity.

…and? might I add that these are the SAME people who pick and choose who gets hired, despite our fallen economy (U.S.), doesn’t care to give the job to the ones in need so they can PAY back their debts peacefully and after hiring you, loballing your check then FIRES you at will… WTH!?
Perhaps they just don’t get it. and Shame on these background check companies who sets the good-boy standards bar to level “JesusChrist” so nobody (that truely needs the job) qualifies for that position.

Two problems here:
1: Too much easy credit extended to risky consumers (too little means to pay debts in difficult times.
2: Banks and finance Companies lacking resources to remain solvent in difficult times.
Banks/finance institutions should be held to the same accountability standards as the individuals they extend the credit to. If Banks don’t have the cash, they shouldn’t extend credit to the public.
CASH MAKES? NO ENEMIES. Don’t take on the credit just because it is/was extended to you.

The truth is as long as? you fear going to jail they win. This is how they make you obey with threats of jail. Ask the IRS if their jail scares me. I called them up and told them right on the phone they can go fuck themselves and I will no longer pay any taxes and will only accept jail time from now on and they told me not to worry I am on the do not collect list. They will never try to collect them. LOL keep obeying chumps and see what that gets you. Refuse to work in jail even if threatened.

Basically, they don’t teach the cops constitutional law. In our jurisdiction, the cops will tell you when something is a civil matter, and they aren’t allowed to pursue it further. It’s these rinky-dink hellholes like Mayberry where the cops come fresh out of 12th (or maybe 10th or? 11th) grade to become “cops”.

There are also darknets? like I2P that people can start using. It’s basically and internet over top of the internet. Check that out too. They have anonymous file sharing through programs like imule. If the government tries to crack down on the internet, people will just communicate through these darknets, and the government won’t know who’s doing what.

@smiguet Yes, I know about what happened to the liberty dollars that were being created. Bitcoins aren’t something that they can confiscate at a central location though. Check? out the software for yourself and see. Also, the government can’t completely shut down the internet either, too much of the economy already depends on it. As long as users of the internet can still communicate with each others IP address, you can use Bitcoin.
